How Samson Ebukam zone drops from the LOS
As football has progressed and defenses have become more and more complex, d-coordinator's will take the opportunity to drop their LOS (line of scrimmage) players into coverage. Even though this isn't the norm for most defensive lineman and LOS players, it is absolutely critical for DLineman to understand how to drop. Below, Samson Ebukam gives us some great teach tape on how exactly to zone drop and make plays doing it.
Here is the full clip I will be breaking down...
Sell the rush
The dropper should never give any tips they are dropping. He should show an athletic aggressive stance that tells the tackle he's rushing.
Check for run
If the end drops and it's a run, the defense is in trouble. The end should always check to see if it's run and then drop.
Peep the slant
Because the end has help behind him he should look for an opportunity to get a pick six on a slant route.
Drop to your zone
If the receive doesn't run a slant the end now needs to expand to his zone
Eyes on the QB
The QBs eyes will tell the end if he should expand more, stay put or break.
Break on the ball
When the quarterback cocks back to throw, the end needs to break as quickly as possible toward the intended receiver.
Shoot w/ outside leverage
The end has inside help so he can be extremely aggressive as long as he doesn't let the RB get outside of him.
